Barnes Bus Route Changes From 15 August

From Saturday 15 August, Transport for London (TfL) will introduce changes to several bus routes in Barnes, formalising temporary arrangements put in place after Hammersmith Bridge closed to motor traffic in 2019.

The biggest change is that route 533 will be withdrawn and largely replaced by a revised 209, which will run every 15-17 minutes between Hammersmith Bus Station and Barnes Pond via Lonsdale Road, Castelnau and Church Road. Note this route will now operate in both directions through the Castelnau and Lonsdale Road area.

The 72 will continue to run as normal, with the temporary bus stand at Hammersmith Bridge replaced by a permanent stop.

The 378 will provide a new daytime link to the London Wetland Centre between 9.30am and 5pm (4pm in winter), improving connections from Putney Bridge. At other times it will continue to operate directly via Rocks Lane.

The 485 will be shortened to terminate at Mortlake Bus Station, no longer serving Church Road or Castelnau. Passengers travelling between Barnes Pond and Castelnau will instead use the revised 209.

TfL state the changes will improve reliability, provide better access to the Wetland Centre and create new links across the area. Some passengers will need to change buses, although same-stop interchanges have been provided where possible.

TfL tell us that the changes will be kept under review once they come into effect.

BCA has raised two concerns with TfL. As the revised 209 will terminate and turn round at Barnes Pond, we have questioned the environmental impact as well as the frequency and reliability of this service. TfL have agreed to meet with us again in October to discuss further once the route is operational.  We are happy hear residents’ views on this.

Meanwhile, there are no changes to the 419 and 33 routes, we encourage customers to check their journeys using the planning tools on the TfL website or the TfL Go app.
