BCA’s Statement on the Future of Hammersmith Bridge

The Barnes Community Association (BCA) recognises the significance of Hammersmith & Fulham (H&F) Council's announcement regarding the future of Hammersmith Bridge for the residents of Barnes.

We support the shared objective of finding a sustainable and workable long-term solution for the bridge that balances structural, financial and community needs. In particular, we welcome H&F's emphasis on inclusive service design and its recognition of the barriers faced by residents with diverse needs, including older people, disabled people and those with caring responsibilities.

Our priorities are as follows:

  • Everyday connectivity - For many people in Barnes, Hammersmith Bridge is far more than a transport route; it is an essential link for daily life, and future operations must reflect the real-world needs of the community.

  • Mobility and accessibility - Any future arrangements must provide safe, practical and reliable access for older residents and those with reduced mobility, ensuring they can reach hospitals, local amenities and essential services on both sides of the river.

The BCA will continue to work constructively with Richmond Council, Sarah Olney MP's office, Hammersmith & Fulham Council, Barnes and Hammersmith Electric Light Transport and other stakeholders to understand the emerging proposals and assess their practical implications for Barnes residents.

We will continue to advocate for solutions that put the needs of Barnes residents first, with accessibility to and from Barnes at their heart. We also remain committed to pressing for improved public transport links and will continue to challenge TfL's assumption that local transport planning should depend on the bridge reopening to general traffic, a prospect that appears more uncertain than ever.
