An update on Barnes Food Fair 2026

Petition to ban HGVs submitted to Council

Thank you to everyone who supported the Travel Barnes Ponder team’s campaign to stop heavy good vehicles using The Terrace and Barnes High Street. This campaign has seen the team gathering signatures over six Saturdays on Barnes High Street and on White Hart Lane and an online campaign to reach as many residents as possible. We received 1,192 signatures in support of our petition which now goes to the Council’s Transport and Air Quality Committee meeting in March for their consideration. We will report on the outcome of this meeting soon.

Could you be our next Treasurer?

We’re looking for a new Honorary Treasurer to join our Board of Trustees and help oversee the financial health of the charity. This is a hands-on role suited to a senior finance, audit or accountancy professional who can support strong governance by presenting accounts, monitoring financial performance and working closely with trustees and committees. Charity experience is helpful but not essential, and this is a rewarding opportunity to play a key role in shaping our future.

“Barnes Tuesday Local” every Tuesday at The Bull’s Head

Our “Barnes Tuesday Local” launched at the end of January and it’s been fabulous seeing so many neighbours and familiar faces. The informal weekly get-together continues every Tuesday, 6pm - 8pm at The Bull’s Head.

Mark your calendars - Barnes Fair 2026

We’ve started working on Barnes Fair and this year’s event takes place on Saturday 11 July, 9:30am - 5:30pm. We’re looking forward to another wonderful day filled with great shopping, live entertainment, delicious food and drink and fun for the whole family.

We’re also starting to look for volunteers to help out - if you’d like to sort books for the Bookstall, prepare Pimm’s for the Pimm’s stall, be part of the traffic marshalling team on the day or get involved in any other way, please email us at fairs@barnes-ca.org .

Update from our Greenkeeper

There are encouraging signs of spring on and around Barnes Green with the 2,000 bulbs planted by Russell and his volunteers now beginning to bloom – and what a sight it will be when they are all fully out. New willow fencing is also being constructed around the flower beds between Barnes Green Centre and Gail’s to help protect the planting. Russell has also been working with Duke of Edinburgh volunteers, coordinated through Barnes Common, on maintenance around the Green including clearing litter from both the Green and the pond. Amid this work, there was some sad news from the pond, with the death of the resident male swan, leaving the female swan - or pen - a widow for the second time.

Parklet repairs completed by Men’s Shed team

The BCA Men’s Shed team has recently completed repairs to the parklet on Church Road, replacing a damaged side panel that had been hit by a car and has been in need of attention for some time. We’re incredibly grateful to our Men’s Shed volunteers for the hands on work they do to improve Barnes.

A huge thank you to everyone who donated unwanted Christmas food items to BCA. We had a wonderful response. Your donations have now been passed over to our charity partner, Share & Care Collective, where they will be added to upcoming Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day care packages that they are putting together for local families.

Penny Poppins Nursery is now open at Rose House on Barnes High Street, offering a calm, safe and nurturing environment for children aged 20 months - 4 years. This small, independent, Ofsted-registered nursery provides flexible 3, 4 and 6 hour sessions across 38 weeks of the year.

Protecting wildlife during nesting season at Leg o’ Mutton

Did you know that small changes in how we use Leg o’ Mutton can make a big difference to our local bird population?

Leg o’ Mutton is an officially designated Local Nature Reserve, managed by Barnes Common Ltd and supported by an Advisory Committee of local stakeholders, including Barnes Community Association, and is an important bird refuge, especially during nesting season (mid-February to August), when many birds nest on or close to the ground. Fast-moving activities such as jogging can unintentionally flush birds from their nests, leaving eggs and chicks exposed to cold, predators or abandonment. Likewise, dogs, even friendly, well-trained ones, are perceived as predators, and off-lead dogs can cause birds to panic and desert their nests. Walking rather than jogging, and keeping dogs on short leads, are simple steps that help ensure the reserve remains a safe haven for wildlife.

Barnes Music Festival

The Barnes Music Festival runs 7- 22 March with the theme Musical Roots. This year’s programme cover features ‘Barney’, a painting by Barnes Artist Bruce Houlder, inspired by one of London’s oldest trees at Barn Elms, a place said to have inspired one of Handel's Arias.

Highlights of the music festival include Sir Thomas Allen, Roderick Williams, Benjamin Grosvenor, Tenebrae Associated Artists and a spectacular Holst Planets Gala. Families and young people are at the heart of the festival, with Singalong Disney, Come & Sing - Bach St John’s Passion, toddler and school concerts, Barnes Young Musician of the Year and pop-up performances.

Barnes Community Association is pleased to be supporting the festival with a small charitable grant, as part of our ongoing support for community projects in Barnes.

Protect yourself from cybercrime, scams and fraud

The Putney & Roehampton Society is hosting an event on cybercrime, scams, and fraud on Monday 23 February at 7:30pm at Community Church, Werter Road, Putney. PC Oliver Clixby of the Cybercrime Unit will explain how fraudsters manipulate trust, hack passwords, and exploit public data, while sharing practical tips to reduce risk. A representative from the SNT police and Neighbourhood Watch, will also be present. The session is in person or online and entry is £3 for non-members.

International Women’s Day event

Richmond Council, CPG Executive Consulting, The Athena Network, and Patch Twickenham are hosting an event this International Women’s Day. Rising Tides, a celebration of the strength, resilience, and collective impact of women takes place 5 March, 9:30am - 4:30pm. Hosted by Tessa Parry-Wingfield, the event will bring together women from business, leadership, community, and social impact to connect, reflect and take meaningful action.
